Building and Maintaining an NT Web Server

reviewed by Charlie Morris

This is just what the title promises, a general guide to Building and Maintaining an NT Web Server. It covers site planning, hardware setup, server software packages, scripting, security, server administration and the other fun stuff you need to know to get a Web server up and running on the Windows NT platform. It's aimed at those who already know the basics of NT.
October 27, 1998
Written in 1996, this book is a little dated now, but most of the basics should still be valid. Chapters include:
  • Windows NT Meets the World Wide Web - covers the basics of the Web, networking, and Windows NT.
  • Developing Your Web Server Gameplan - planning for internal and external Web sites, estimating volume, domain registration, email, system utilities.
  • Web Services from a Business Perspective - brief overviews of HTML, VRML, FTP, Web advertising, news servers, scripting.
  • Selecting and Setting Up Your NT Server Hardware - server hardware, routers, backup systems, UPSs.
  • Microsoft's Internet Information Server
  • O'Reilly's Website
  • Process Corp's Purveyor Web Server
  • Quarterdeck's WebServer
  • The Power of Scripting
  • Forms of the Web
  • Internet/Intranet Resources
  • Web Server Administration
  • Web and NT Server Security Models
  • Avoiding Disaster - Troubleshooting Tips
Appendices include a glossary, a very brief list of online resources, and a short overview of installing NT Server. The CD-ROM includes shareware versions of 2 Web servers (O'reilly's WebSite and Purveyor), a few graphics tools and other utilities, and some clipart.

Building and Maintaining an NT Web Server is a general overview of the process, without a lot of hands-on details. It is a bit dated now, and the last we heard, had gone out of print.
