Have you moved up to a high speed modem yet? I stuck with my 2400 for a long time because I felt there was simply no need for me to change. I'm not a file hound so I didn't need high speed for downloading huge files. Why else would you want one? A 9600 TelePath came with a Gateway I bought and it was definitely faster although much more finicky than my old 2400. But when I plugged in my ZyXel 16,800 I knew I was riding a faster breed of horse altogether.
One of the main reasons I've found for upgrading to a high speed modem is reliability. ZyXel isn't a no-name clone—the company has been around for six years and is one of the two or three driving forces on the cutting edge of modem fax technology. ZyXel modems are designed to be universal modems running in DOS, Windows, Macintosh, UNIX and OS/2 environments. They'll even work with Amiga and NeXT computers. This means fewer missed and dropped connections and less headaches. Running Windows communications software is problematic to start with so a reliable modem is essential if you're really going to try to utilize Window's multi-tasking capabilities while telecommunicating. If the speed doesn't attract you, (and you won't be able to go back) reliability will seal the bargain. The ZyXel U-1496E is a ultra high speed, 16.8bps voice, fax, and data modem with automatic detection of voice or data calls. The bundled VoiceFax software supports up to 1,000 fax/voice mailboxes all on one phone line. The modem combines fast on-line renegotiation with auto fall-forward-back to increase throughput during unstable and poor phone line conditions. Everything from LCD to caller ID support is included and the unit comes with a five year warranty. I used the modem extensively for two months with no problems and have become completely sold on the idea of having dependable, high speed capabilities. Here's a few of the most important ZyXel features: -Ultra High Speed 19.2/16.8 Kbps -V.32bis/V.32, V.22bis/V.22, BELL 212A -V.17-14.4 Kbps, EIA Class 2, G3 Fax, S&R; -V.42/V.42bis with Selective Reject-MNP 3/4/5 -Digitized Voice Capability -Caller ID/Distinctive Ring -Remote Configuration -Auto Fall Forward/Fall Back -Call Back Security with Password Protection -Line Probing Techniques -2/4 Wire Leased/Dial Line -Auto Data/FAX/Voice Detection -Upgradable by EPROM As modem users become more sophisticated, as technology drives their demands for broader use and more sophisticated PC software, the ZyXel modems continue to surf the cutting edge of modem technology. |
