If an article is here in the Archives, it is because we feel it may be out of date in one way or another. Some of the information may still be useful to some readers, but keep in mind that some information may no longer be accurate. Product capabilities change, prices change, links may no longer work, and in fact, the company that makes this product may have gone down the tubes long ago. To get the latest, we recommend that you go to The Web Developer's Journal Home Page, and see if there is a more recent article about this subject.

Deltec is probably the oldest most established company in the UPS market. They are a world-wide provider of UPS systems that range in size from small, workstation specific units like the PowerRite Series to huge industrial size units capable of handling extremely large network servers and in factory settings.

The PowerRite Series is designed to provide continuous, computer-grade, AC power for critical workstations in the event of a power outage. They incorporate a relatively small battery that allows 5 to 10 minutes of operation for shutting down the system gracefully.

We found the figure to be a little on the high side considering we tested close to a full load. When we pulled the plug to time the available power we began saving work and closing applications—the kind of operations presumably typical in a real-life power outage situation. These types of operations are disk intensive and draw a fair amount of power. We Presumed that you would be aware of a power outage with one minute of it occurring and begin to shut down promptly. The PowerRite had plenty of power left over to spare after we saved and closed a large database, wordprocessor and PIM and logged out and shut down Windows NT 3.5. You don’t have time to dawdle but the time you have is sufficient.

The unit we tested was designed for individual workstations, not servers. The computer is presumed to be attended. However, if the power outage lasts no longer than 15 to 20 minutes and the server is more or less idling during the outage the PowerRite may be sufficient. Software for direct computer communications and control is available for Novell, LAN Manager, LANtastic, UNIX, Banyan, 3Com, Appleshare, and some other systems.

PowerRite UPS systems also perform basic power conditioning which should reduce wear and tear on mechanical computer parts like hard drives as well as reduce the risk of surges damaging sensitive circuits.

Deltec’s PowerRite Plus systems also incorporate Deltec’s Advanced Battery Management that not only prolongs the life of a battery up to 10 years but also warns users in advance of battery problems. Backup times range from 5 to 45 minutes depending on the types of systems attached and the particular UPS model.

Online voltage range is +/- 20% with online regulation from -10% to +6%. The battery is sealed, maintenance-free. Depending on the level of depletion, charging times range from 3 to 8 hours. MOVs and line filters address normal and common mode noise. A serial communications port is located on the rear panel for a computer interface with alarms with history, measured parameters, self-test, and other features.
